Chicago Update |
In
October, we opened up a new division of Workforce Language Services.
Multilingual
Chicago is a language school in the Logan Square/Avondale
area dedicated to honoring and promoting the multilingual nature
of our city through language classes for adults and children.
We just started our third session and currently offer classes in
Spanish, French, Italian, Mandarin and Arabic.
We also host periodic cultural events, from wine tastings to cooking
classes, and will begin hosting weekly conversation evenings for
those interested in practicing their Spanish, French or Italian.

Our blog
continues its coverage of a wide variety of issues, including language
in the workplace, language policy, translation, immigrant workers
and Latino culture. Some recent blogs
include:
Survey
of Chicago restaurants finds widespread segregation in staff
A labor group surveyed restaurants in Chicago and found significant
segregation between front-of-house workers (waiters, hosts) and
back-of-house staff (busboys, dishwashers). The study “found
that nearly 80 percent of whites work in the front, nearly two-thirds
of Latinos in the back.” more>>
Gabriel
Garcia Marquez’s translator explains why translation matters
The art, Grossman and others will say, is more than finding the
appropriate word. Translation is about words and music, fidelity
and feel, the balance between getting too caught up in the literal
meaning and improvising so freely that the author’s voice
is lost entirely. more>>
English
literacy programs lose funding, widening communication gap
An estimated 850,000 adults in the Greater Chicago area have
limited English competency skills, according to Literacy Chicago.
With many of their children in English-speaking public schools,
this creates a huge problem for Chicago schools. more>>

a cell phone, a laptop and a stack of business cards in Jill's basement
to a beautiful 1600 square foot facility, a staff of 10 and a team

satisfied clients include government and corporate clients like

small- and medium-sized businesses, not-for-profits and individuals.
If you visit our recently
updated website, you'll
see an updated tagline as well: Bridging Language &
Culture in the Workplace, the Community and Beyond. When
we first launched, our focus was workplace-specific; however, in
recent years we've expanded our scope significantly - to the community
and beyond - and want to people to understand our potential reach.
In celebration of this
5-year milestone, we're happy to extend a 10% discount on

"Everything,
including, the instructors, the owner, the curriculum, the
ambiance of the space, the yummy snacks and hipness of the
neighborhood was perfect for us. The teachers were great about
showing us how to use what we were learning in real life,
as we spent a portion of the session out in the neighborhood
going to restaurants, street vendors and stores where Spanish
was spoken. Bottom line: A wonderfully enriching way to spend
a weekend learning about Latin American culture and language,
presented by people who are passionate about teaching."

"I
wanted to send you a quick email to let you know how much
I appreciate your classes and flexibility - you’re always
so accommodating. I have taken a wide range of Spanish programs
(Berlitz, Diplomatic Language Services, high school teachers,
native speakers, professors in Costa Rica) and I honestly
can say that your instructor is the best teacher that I have
ever had. Her vast knowledge of the language and culture continues
to amaze me! I cannot say enough great things about her!"
